  • Muslims, Christians meet, discuss religious similarities, differences

    There’s a long-standing rule that two things you never talk about in polite circles are religion and politics.

    On Monday night,a meeting of “Muslims and Christians United” broke that first rule.

    More than 100 people attended the interfaith event, held at the Muslim Association of the Lehigh Valley in Whitehall Township, to better understand how the two faiths could share their spiritual quests, despite many differences.

    The event entitled “What’s it Like to be Christian in America,” came after last month the group examined the Islamic faith in America.

  • Police department upgrades to faster mobile devices

    One local police force is speeding ahead with faster technology.

    The Palmer Township police are currently in the process of upgrading from 3G to 4G for their mobile data terminals.  The upgrade will provide the force with a faster transfer of information to the [police] cars and also better access to their remote desktop unit.

    4G provides GPS capability and also will allow for all the police data to be held on the remote desktop, which is located at the station. Currently, all the data resides on the mobile data terminals, which is less secure.

  • Slow down: more speed limit signs coming to local road

    A residential request for more street signs on Norton Avenue in Palmer Township was granted Monday.

    The Board of Supervisors approved two speed limit signs, one on each side of the road, to be placed on Norton Ave. west of Loomis Street.

    The Traffic and Safety Committee, who recommended it to the board, reviewed the residents’ petition.

    The residents of the street requested either a speed limit sign or a watch children sign to be placed on the road. Traffic gets heavy on the side street during the weekends when people try to divert from the local church traffic, officials said.

  • Palmer Township prepares for next year?s winter weather

    The Board of Supervisors approved a contract with architectural and engineering services for the proposed salt storage building Monday.

    The building is expected to house salt for an entire winter

    The funds, $7,910, will be coming from the 2012 liquid funds budget not the general funds of the township.

    Currently any extra salt stored by Palmer is stored in bins behind the current salt building. The set-up is difficult for the township when snowstorms occur back to back.

    Supervisor David Colver stated, “it’s the convenience of having [the salt storage building].” The new building will be 50’ by 72’ and will hold 1,700 tons...

  • 2 men accused of defrauding taxpayers of more than $800,000

    Two men stand accused of defrauding local taxpayers out of more than $800,000.

    Robert J. Kearns and Patrick J. McLaine were charged Monday with criminal conspiracy, a third degree felony, along with two related charges each. 

    Both men operated Municipal Energy Managers Inc., a Scranton-area company that was hired by Bethlehem Twp., Northampton Co., to privatize its streetlights.

    The township signed a contract with MEM in July 2007 to help the municipality buy its street lights from PPL, said District Attorney John Moganelli. The plan was supposed to reduce the township's overall electricity bill.

  • Bell drop rings in new year

    Fireworks in Allentown went off just after midnight to ring in the new year.

    There was also a bell drop at PPL Plaza, and a block party on Hamilton Street for families.

    Allentown will celebrating its 250th anniversary this year.

  • New bank branch opens with efficiency

    If folks are looking for a place to save their money from tax refunds, a new TD bank has opened on Wyandotte Street in Bethlehem.

    69 News was at the grand opening Saturday.

    It's the first energy efficient branch in the Lehigh Valley.

    Bank officials said the building's drive-thru has solar panels, that will produce 20 percent of the bank's energy needs.

    They said they want to help folks save some green, while going green.

  • Wings, pizza most popular foods for Super Bowl parties

    What's a Super Bowl party without wings? At the Basin Street Hotel on Main Street in Kutztown, they were preparing to make thousands of wings on Sunday.

    Owner David Huang said the restaurant goes through tons of wings throughout the night, with most of the orders coming in right before the big game.

    And in Bethlehem, they were frying up the wings and getting the pizzas ready for party orders.

    The folks at Lehigh Pizza on Third street in the city were busy throughout the afternoon. They said a majority of their pizza orders came in around 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
